Thomas Biagi keeps the leadership of the Italian Superstars Championship at the end of the crucial round at Mugello, fifth of the season, that saw the Italian driver penalized by 60 kg handicap weight.
In race one, the team bearer for Team BMW Italy obtained a fourth place which was conquerd with great tenacity despite the handicap of the ballast imposed by rules. The victory went to Fabrizio Giovanardi (Porsche), who was followed by Gianni Morbidelli (BMW) and Luigi Ferrara (Mercedes).
A seventh place was instead the outcome of the bagarre of race two; this was worth four very useful points for the championship; the race was won by Max Pigoli (Mercedes), on the podium together with Luigi Ferrara and Gianni Morbidelli.
Thanks to the mentioned results, Biagi keeps the lead of the classification of the National Series and stands now at 116 points, just one point clear of Ferrara.
Thomas Biagi: “The outcome of my weekend was extremely positive as regarding Friday and Saturday: the team perfomed a considerable work to minimize the effecto of the 60kg of sportive ballast I had on board and this allowed me to set the first and third best times in the two first free practice sessions and to obtain the first row in qualifying. Excellent results. In race one it was not possible to do better: the present balance of performance can be effective in the single lap but it is completely uninfluent on the advantage that more powerful cars have at the start. As a consequence, all efforts spent by the team and myself to obtain an important performance in qualifying were nullified in the initial meters of the race were I cound do nothing against the acceleration of Mercedes and Chrysler. In race two, the train created in the initial stages obstructed a possible recovery, but I still keep the leadership in the classification of a championship that will most probably be very tight until the end and at Varano’thanks’ to this seventh place I will become 40kg thinner!”.
The Superstars Series will be back on track next 29 August at Varano de’ Melegari in a round valid for the Italian Championship only.
