August 29th, 2010 Varano, races: from riches to rags…

Double-faced weekend for Thomas Biagi at Varano de’ Melegari, theatre of the sixth round of the Italian Superstars Championship.

The driver for BMW Team Italy has been author of a good start in race one that allowed him to take the lead, position kept until the chequered flag. Behind him the team mate Stefano Gabellini, while Max Pigoli (Mercedes) reached the third place of the podium. Biagi also set the fastest lap of the race and was the only driver destroying the wall of seventy seconds.

Not as favourable was the outcome of race two instead: after about ten minutes the Italian driver was fourth, very close to Ermanno Dionisio (Audi) when an sudden technical problem occurred at the end of the main straight forced him to an early retirement. The victory went to his team mate Luca Cappellari who was followed by Max Pigoli and Luigi Ferrara, both on Mercedes.

The updated classification of the Italian Championship sees now Biagi second at 137 points, just one short of the new leader Pigoli. Ferrara is third at 133.

Thomas Biagi: “This has been a bitter-sweet weekend: this morning I obtained the victory in race one, a crucial result for the classification, as well as the fastest lap of the race which confirms the validity of the preparation work that I usually do before every racing weekend at the wheel of the Grid GP simulator, my “drivers lab”.

What a pity for the missed chance in race two: men of BMW Team Italy did a great job as usual but technical failures can happen anyway. This DNF does not help me in terms of ballast as I will have 50kg additional weight on board of my M3 BMW at Paul Ricard in three weeks time”.
