August 8th, 2011 Thomas Biagi: “It’s impossible to fight for top positions, a revision of the balance of performance is needed”

Biagi at SPA 2011

Defensive races for Thomas Biagi in Spa (Belgium) Spa (Belgium), theatre of the seventh round of the Superstars Series valid both for the International and Italian Championships and one of the circuit less favourable to the features of the BMW M3.

In race one, after a good start from the tenth position, the Italian driver of BMW Team Italy managed to recover up to the sixth final place without ever getting close, as happened to all his team mates, to the laptimes set by the rivals equipped with higher capacity engines. The fastest lap of the reigning champion (2’32.427) was nearly two seconds slower than the fastest lap of the race (2’30.690).

Despite the sportive ballast given to the top three drivers of race one, things did not change in race two either and Biagi, started from eighth had to use all his experience to obtain a fourth place.

In the classification of the International Series, Biagi is currently third with 110 points, 36 short of the leader; same position in the Italian championship where he stands at 67 points but with a gap of 25 points to the top.

Thomas Biagi:
“Wishing to see the glass half full I can say that I limited damage. As expected, the difference in performance of our car, equipped with a 4 litres engine, to that of higher capacity engines has been too much of a penalty in the long straights and wrote us off from the fight for top positions.
In the past we could play on a higher tyres wear of the rivals in the final part of the race, but the new compounds introduced this year voided this advantage and in race two I could not get the third place despite the car in front of me had 50kg sportive ballast on board and was slowed down by a technical problem.
Now we will be racing on two circuits similar to Spa, i.e. Mugello and Vallelunga, where without interventions on the balance of performance we will live again the situation of this weekend which will exclude BMWs from the title fight. I am certain that the Technical Bureau will give us the chance of defending in a sportive and fair way the titles obtained in 2010″.

The Superstars Series will be back on track next 25 September at Mugello.
